why i recommend eating breakfast
Breakfast. Probably the most discussed and disputed meal of the day. Should you or shouldn’t you eat breakfast? Should you fast till lunch? Should you just have coffee?
My nutritionist opinion is absolutely you should be having breakfast. You’re body has spent all night working under the radar digesting, consolidating information, repairing tissue and preparing for the next day - it wants fuel when you wake up. Here are a few important reasons to include breakfast in your morning routine -
Once our body sees daylight, it expects you to break the fast. Disrupting this pattern by delaying eating can have subsequent effects on our overall energy and sleep health.
Delaying food at the start of the day can impact our energy levels later on - ever had the afternoon slump? It’s most likely because you haven’t fuelled properly throughout the whole day.
Spreading your food out throughout the day is beneficial for gut health. Stimulating the digestive system throughout the day will maintain gut health and motility. If we consume all our meals and calories in a shorter window, our gut is dormant for a longer period of time, meaning less motility and poorer gut health.
Consuming food in the morning is not just important for energy, but for brain function too. Glucose is our brain’s only source of energy. Delaying a healthy macro-balanced meal means your brain isn’t getting the kickstart it needs to be productive.
Eating in the morning provides our bodies with energy to stay active, which in turn improves our overall health.
So have I convinced you yet? If yes, I bet your thinking “What the heck do I eat then?”. I got you. Here are my favourite easy, healthy breakfasts -
Smoothie with vanilla protein powder, cacao, banana, oats and peanut butter.
Sliced boiled egg on toast with avo and Mexican seasoning.
Wholegrain toast with hummus, cottage cheese and sliced tomato.
Plain protein yoghurt with tinned apple slices, cinnamon and oats.
